The Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Program (SSEAYP) is an annual cultural exchange program that provides the youth with the opportunity to visit ASEAN countries and Japan, and establish friendship with their counterparts. Delegates live on board a Japanese luxury ship. While on country visits, they engage in various activities such as courtesy call, interaction with local youth, visiting institutions, and staying with local families. The two-month cruise provides avenues to broaden their international viewpoint and cultivate the spirit of international cooperation.

The program is participated in by Japan and ASEAN-member countries namely Brunei, Indonesia, Lao People's Democratic republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.

 

Sponsorship
The SSEAYP is carried out primarily by the Office of the Prime Minister of Japan through the Management and Coordination Agency-Youth Affairs Administration, with the active cooperation of the participating countries involved. In the Philippines, the program is being implemented by the Office of the President through the NYC.

As the primary sponsor of the program, the Japanese government shoulders the roundtrip airfare tickets of the participants to the first port of call and in going back totheir respective countries. Expenses for meals and accomodation on board the ship, transportation and admission fees required for study tours are also covered.

The participants bear pre-departure expenses such as passport fees, expenses in preparation for the cultural shows and rehearsals and pocket money for the duration of the program.

 

Activities
Participating Youths (PY) will introduce their own countries on various aspects (political, economic, and social) via exhibitions, cultural show, discussions and club activities.

In each port of call, PYs will also engage in activities such as institutional visits, goodwill exchanges with local youths, homestays, and sharing of ideas.

 

Qualification of Delegates

  • Filipino youth 18 to 30 years old, single
  • good moral character
  • active officer/member of any youth/youth-serving organization
  • physically and mentally fit to travel
  • preferably a first-time traveller and must not have been a grantee/recipient of NYC-funded international travel
  • has strong background of Philippine history, geography, and culture,
  • knowledgeable of current issues of the Philippines, japan and ASEAN countries
  • must be resident of the region represented for at least one year immediately preceding the date of application

  • Five (5) copies of of SSEAYP Application Form

  • Brief resume not more than 3 pages
  • Passport sized pictures with white background (5 pcs)
  • Letter reference from school/community/NGO where the applicant is an officer/member (1 copy)
  • Barangay and Police Clearance (1 copy each)
  • Certificate of Good Moral Character (1 copy)
  • Self-addressed envelope with P20 worth stamps (2 pcs)

Note:
- Application with incomplete requirements shall be automatically disqualified.
- Qualified applicants must be willing to take a leave of absence for 3 months (August to October 2002).

ASEAN YOUTH AWARDS
ASEAN, AYDM

Brief Description
The ASEAN Youth Awards, is one of the projects of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Youth [ASY]. Brunei Darussallam proposed the project in 1997. In 1998, the 15th ASY Meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam, approved the project for implementation. The 1st ASEAN Youth Awards was held in Vientiane, Lao PDR in 1999 with the theme, "ASEAN Youth Entrepreneurs Gearing Towards the 21st Century."

During the 16th ASY Meeting in Brunei, it was agreed that the award will be conducted annually with the host of the ASEAN Youth Day Meeting [AYDM] as the venue for awarding ceremony.

In the Philippines, the National ASEAN Sub Committee on Youth [NASY] headed by the Department of Foreign Affairs [DFA], with NYC and other government agencies as members, implements the search nationwide. The categories for the annual search varies every year based on the ASY Meeting agreement.

 

Legal Basis
In compliance with Sec. 10 par. [n], R.A. 8044 to wit: "To participate in the international youth for a, symposia and organizations such as the International Youth Forum, Asian Youth Council, ASEAN Youth Forum, United Nations Commissions International Youth Year [IYY] and other similar bodies."

"To administer youth exchange programs as well as monitor and coordinate all foreign-sponsored youth programs and projects such as the SSEAYP and similar exchanges and goodwill missions."

 

Objectives/Purposes

  1. To recognize the outstanding contribution of ASEAN youth and youth NGOs towards regional development and cooperation;
  2. To enhance awareness of youth in ASEAN towards regional understanding;
  3. To promote cooperation and solidarity among the youth NGOs towards realizing ASEAN brotherhood;
  4. To provide ASEAN youth with opportunities in developing their regional and international skills in the light of the new realities as a global village.

 

 

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH FORUM
SEOUL, KOREA

Brief Description
The International Youth Forum [IYF] is a five-day annual gathering of youths from around the world to discuss the most pressing issues and problems of the youth. The forum is sponsored by the Government of the Republic of Korea [ROK] through the National Council of Youth Organizations in Korea [NCYOK].

Every year the Philippines, through the National Youth Commission is invited to send at least eight [8] participants to represent the country. Consequently, the NYC open the application to all interested young leaders nationwide who shall be willing to shoulder for the airfare and the other incidental traveling expenses.

In compliance with Sec. 10 par. [n], R.A. 8044 to wit: "To participate in the international youth for a, symposia and organizations such as the International Youth Forum, Asian Youth Council, ASEAN Youth Forum, United Nations Commissions International Youth Year [IYY] and other similar bodies."

  1. To contribute to international peace and development by providing the youth with the opportunity to recognize their role as future leaders.
  2. To provide an opportunity to establish a sound sense of value among the youths and to promote understanding of each other as democratic citizens of the world;
  3. To emphasize and acknowledge the importance of youth in the rapidly changing international society today;
  4. To search for desirable methods on how to participate in the process of economic development in the new millennium as youths and citizens of a global village, and make the youth comprehend their role.
  5. To provide an opportunity for youths to exchange ideas and opinions concerning their role in economic development and to share friendship regardless of race and religion.

 


ASIAN and PACIFIC YOUTH FORUM (APYF)
TOKYO, JAPAN

Brief Description
The Asian and Pacific Youth Forum [APYF] serves as a venue for annual gathering of youths from the Asian and Pacific regions to discuss issues and problems such as peace, culture, education and environment. The 15-day forum is sponsored by the Management Coordination Agency [MCA], Prime Minister's Office of Japan through the National Assembly for Youth Development [NAYD].

To complete the five-member delegation representing Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, the National Youth Commission invites applications nationwide. The Japanese government sponsors the airfare, food and accommodation of the participants.
