The right of students to organize, be recognized and to participate in policy making, particularly in educational institutions they are part of, is an integral part of their aspirations as productive members of the youth sector of our country. We cannot over-emphasize that from the youth sector the future leaders of our land.

In this context, much importance is given to the role of the student government in protecting students' rights and welfare as well as contributing significant changes for the progress of the society. Heads of student governments should therefore be equipped with the basic managerial skills to effectively administer their respective organization in the pursuit of the objectives they set out to accomplish for the student body they represent.

The National Youth Commission (NYC) was created under Republic Act 8044 otherwise known as Youth Nation Building Act of 1995, with its mandate to mobilize the youth's abilities, talents and skills to harness them to their fullest potential as partners in nation-building.

The Student Government Management Program (SGMP) supports this mandate by assisting student government leaders in the tertiary level acquire basic managerial skills through the implementation of a management training program on a nationwide scale, and providing the necessary logistical, technical and financial requirements.

The SGMP SGMP is specifically designed to help student leaders develop effective task management and people management skills through exposure to innovative management principles as well as tools and technologies that can be readily applied to bring out excellent performance in their respective student bodies.

The SGMP is implemented on a regional basis and in coordination with student councils in order to reach the most number of participants from the 810 institutions of higher learning, 21 percent of which are government-owned.

VISION
The Student Government Management Program (SGMP) seeks the development of a new breed of student government leaders equipped with the necessary managerial skills in order to act as effective agents of change in their respective educational communities and the country at large.

MISSION
The Student Government Management Program (SGMP) seeks to provide the necessary managerial skills and theoretical foundations to student council officers in response to the leadership, organizational and advocacy requirements of their youth constituency, in line with the principle of empowerment.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

  1. To identify and impart task management and people management skills to student government leaders.

  2. To discuss available tools and strategies to be used in the performance of duties and responsibilities.

  3. To describe the role of the student government leaders as "change agents" in the educational strata.


NATIONAL INTER-FRATERNITY AND SORORITY PEACE COUNCIL (NIC)
Organized through the conduct of quarterly cluster assemblies with team-building activities to address problems, issues and concerns of fraternities and sororities in school campuses. Its goal is to achieve peace and unity, recognize the establishment of fraternities and sororities, promote academic excellence, environmental awareness and related concerns.

 

SATELLITE OFFICES
Established through linking with student councils in colleges and universities all over the country to serve as a channel of information on matters pertaining to youth thereby paving the way for democratization of opportunities for the youth.
