We're proud to be pinoy...

Thai sports officials apologize over PM's remarks (

Even before any formal investigation on the alleged unfair officiating in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games could start two Thai sports officials have already apologized over the remarks of Prime Minister Takshin Shinawatra.

Shinawatra sparked an uproar with comments implying that the Philippines has made accumulating gold medals a bigger priority than upholding the sporting spirit at the regional games, held every two years.

Robert Aventajado, Philippine Olympic Committee chairman, in a television interview Thursday said Jaruk Areerajakaran, secretary general of Thailand's Olympic Committee, apologized and denied that Thai officials have any complaints.

The two officials -- Gen. Jaruk Areerajakaran, secretary-general of the Thailand Olympic Committee, and Chaipak Siriwat, vice-president of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand have apologized before the SEA Games officials.

Aventajado said the Areerajakaran clarified that he made no statement against the Philippine team.

He said he will bring the latest information to the attention of the Department of Foreign Affairs which would be handle the complaint of Shinawatra on a different level.

President Arroyo earlier ordered a swift investigation into the Thai prime minister's suggestion that host Philippines was unfairly favoring its own competitors for medals in the Southeast Asian Games.

"I am concerned over the remarks of an ally and good friend, Prime Minister Thaksin," she said in a statement. "I'm directing the officials of the games to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into this matter and submit an impartial report within 24 hours."

Arroyo called for sobriety and prudence, and said it was everyone's duty to be "just and fair without bias towards any country or team."(Sunnex with AP)
