Here in the NYC, all GIP trainees are given basic training on computer use, telephone etiquette and basic customer service procedures, which they will be able to practice over their two month term. They are usually tasked to answer the phones, make simple correspondence (internal or external) as well as assist the staff whenever they are short-handed.

On our important projects, GIP trainees have acted as Production Assistants for our programs, as well as reliable back-ups for our logistical needs. Some also get the urge to serve government and end up as staff here in the NYC.

There are also summer GIP programs in other government agencies, as well as some private companies. :)
