Mohammad Hanny M. Camid
Commissioner representing Mindanao

“Your worth is not for who you are or what you have, but for what others have become because of you.” This has always been the mantra of our Commissioner representing Mindanao , Commissioner Mohammad Hanny M. Camid. This belief can be attributed to his unwavering passion and determination to serve his fellow youth. As the SK Federation President of the Municipality of Binidayan , Lanao del Sur from 1996 – 2002, Comm. Camid focused on providing his constituents exposure and enhancing their skills through the conduct of series of leadership trainings and seminars on parliamentary procedure. He also gave priority to sports through construction of basketball courts to veer away their attention from drugs and addiction.

After serving as the SK Federation President, he then worked as a Technical Assistant for Muslim Youth in Malacañang from 2002-2004. During his stint as a Technical Assistant, one of his projects is Palihang Pinoy, a moral recovery seminar among the youth conducted in 5 areas and trainings on youth development for the young Muslims.

A graduate of AB History in Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology, Comm. Camid has become active in many youth organizations even until now. Proof that he loves working with the youth and for the youth. He was one of the Convenors of the UNLAD (Union of New Leaders Aiming for the Development of the Phil.). He is also an active member of the Mu Kappa Phi Fraternity, Philippine Muslim Student Association, LAKAS – Youth, Philippine Historical Society, and the National Movement of Young Legislators.

Now, as the Commissioner representing Mindanao of the National Youth Commission, Comm. Camid focuses on the peace and development in Mindanao and in the empowerment of the Minadanaon and Muslim youth. As he says, “development of the nation can only be achieved if we work together, setting aside our differences and focus more on our commonalities”.

Upon assuming his position as the Commissioner in October 2005, Comm. Camid has already started preparing for the Kabataan sa Mindanao Natin, an interfaith dialogue between the tri-people of Mindanao . This is one of the projects under the 10 th component of the Mindanao Natin Program of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. When asked about the program, he would say, “the Interfaith Dialogue is one of the priority programs of my office because we firmly believe in the power of communication and understanding. We believe in the power of the youth. We believe that the integration of these three concepts will do a lot for the development of Mindanao .

Since he is a Muslim, Comm. Camid also represents the Muslim youth all over the country, especially in Manila where he is currently based. He is now organizing a confederation of Muslim youth organizations so that they could build a network and eventually advocate a Muslim youth agenda. Alongside being a Commissioner for Mindanao , Comm. Camid is also the Chairman of the Committee on Youth with Special Needs and Chairman of the Committee on Legislative Advocacy. Juvenile Justice and Dangerous Drugs are some of the issues his office attends to. Comm. Camid is now also the Chairman of the Bids and Awards Committee of the agency.

But above all, our Commissioner representing Mindanao is a person working to help the youth become what they should be – empowered and determined to take part in developing our country.
