NYC LAUNCHES YOUTH LEGAL AID PROGRAM

Inspired by its commitment to the cause of the underprivileged youth and as a staunch advocate of juvenile justice, the National Youth Commission, in partnership with organizations of senior law students has launched the YOUTH LEGAL AID PROGRAM (YLAP) .

Spearheaded by the Office of Commissioner Richard Alvin Nalupta, who is a law student himself, the YLAP seeks to provide legal assistance to those youth with meritorious cases who are deprived of their right to competent legal representation merely because of their indigence. It is also designed to address the current problem of the Filipino youth who are maltreated and oppressed and the compelling necessity to shield the youth against the drug abuse and exploitation.

At the same time, the YLAP also aims to provide a venue through which the law students may be empowered and their legal knowledge and skills enhanced.

During the first month of its implementation, the NYC has forged partnerships with the following law schools, namely: San Sebastian College-Recoletos Manila; University of Nueva Caceras, Naga City; and Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro City.

It is expected that before the end of 2005, more YLAP partnerships will be inked by the NYC with other law student organizations through the advocacy of the YLAP team and the NYC regional coordinators and area officers.

Queries about the YLAP may be coursed through NYC Legal Officer Atty. Ryan Martinez at telephone numbers 781-2323.
