Call for Nominations for Gwangju Prize for Human Rights Award 2010

Background:
            The annual Gwangju Prize for Human Rights goes to one individual or organization who has contributed to the promotion and advancement of human rights, democracy and peace in their work.
            The Award has the following aims: 1) to enhance the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Uprising by rewarding individuals, groups or institutions in Korea and abroad for their contribution to improving human rights and peace throughout the world; and 2) to recognize individuals, groups and institutions in Korea and/or abroad who are promoting the goals of the May 18 Democratic Uprising as a movement toward unification and cooperation.

Nominee’s Eligibility:

  • Individual
  • Nominee’s Profile/CV/Biography including passport sized   photograph
  • Published work, written articles, speeches delivered, etc. by the      nominee.
  • Published articles/documents (magazine/ news clippings/photos, websites/blogs) or video, film, etc. produced about the nominee.
  • Awards, recognitions and citations
  • Letters of Recommendation from:
    • Individuals or Institutions (NGO, church, academe, Rotary, etc.)
    • National Human Rights Institutions or International Linkages (Human Rights,

Democracy and Peace)

  • Write up/account of International Solidarity work and involvement.
  • Organization
  • Organizational Profile/Brochure
  • Organizational Publications – annual report, newsletter, books, website/blogsite, documentary video/film, etc
  • Published articles/documents (magazine/news clippings/photos, websites/blogs) about the organization
  • Programs/Projects/Campaigns
  • Awards, recognitions and citations
  • Letters of Recommendation from:
  • Individuals or Institutions (NGO, church, academe, Rotary, etc.)
  • National Human Rights Institutions or International Linkages (Human Rights, Democracy and Peace)

Nomination and Criteria:

  • Candidates eligible for the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights are nominated by other individuals or organizations. An individual cannot nominate himself or herself. 
  • The nominator can submit only one name of an organization or individual. More than one will not be accepted. The nomination must be supported by a referee.
  • Selection process is highly confidential and will not be open to any unsolicited advice from the nominators.
  • The decision of the Selection Committee is final and will not be subject to appeal or reconsideration. 

Core criteria:
1) An outstanding person or group who is active in the promotion and advocacy of Peace, Democracy and Human Rights.
2) A person or group working for the reunification of Korea.

Award’s Prize:
Prize money amounting to KRW 50,000,000.00 (50M Korean Won), a gold medal and a certificate will be awarded to the winner.

Submission and Other Required Documents:
Submit the nomination form, nomination profile, letter of recommendation and other supporting documents (pls see attached forms) on or before March 1, 2010 by email and post (including CD of related documents) to the following contact:
