APEC Voices of the Future 2009

Background:

            In conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit meetings, the APEC Voices of the Future (VOF) 2009 will be hosted by Singapore this year, with the theme, “Sustaining Growth, Connecting the Region”.
VOF is an annual youth event for youth leaders in the APEC economies. It aims to provide a platform for youth leaders to engage government and business leaders on issues relevant to APEC.

Venue and Date:

            The event will take place in Singapore from November 9 to 15, 2009.

Participants’ Eligibility:

  • Filipino citizen
  • Between 18 and 25 years old
  • Interested in trade and economy and international relations
  • With track record of active youth , community or public service
  • Must have at least an intermediate level of English proficiency (the official language is English)
  • Of good moral character
  • Physically and mentally fit to travel
  • preferably a first time traveler; former recipients of NYC funded international programs from November 9, 2008 to November 9, 2009 are disqualified to apply
  • Must have a valid passport until at least six (6) months after the date of the departure for the program

Applicants without any passport details shall not be considered.

Expenses:

            Selected participants are required to pay a registration fee of SGD 1,000 (approx. USD 685). A confirmation email will be sent to all selected participants upon a receipt of the application forms. Selected participants have to make payment to the National Youth Council (NYC) Singapore by October 30, 2009 to confirm their places in the VOF. Payment details as follows:

            The organizers (NYC, Singapore in cooperation with the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Council) of the event will bear the hospitality cost of accommodation, local transport and meals. The cost of international airfare and travel insurance will be borne by the participants.
            Participants who have financial difficulties in paying the full registration fees may write to NYC for subsidy consideration. The applicants will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Subsidy applicants will have to demonstrate a strong track record in youth and community work and substantiate their applications with proof of financial difficulties.

            Short essay no longer than 500 words on the topic: “The Role Youth can play in Sustainable Development in the APEC economies” is also required.
